I got my new laptop for the trip. I got it from Costco. It's an HP Pavillion DV9000. It has a 17" screen, 3Gb of memory, lots of hard drive space, and a media card reader. It should serve me well on the trip and after. The many stickers on the machine seem to indicate that it should have a TV tuner card in it, but I couldn't find anything in the box. It does have a remote control that works when playing DVDs. I don't know how essential that is, though. How far are you going to be from a laptop to watch a movie? This is the first laptop I've ever owned. My son has one that he uses for school, but I don't use it much. This is also the first Vista machine for our family. So far I don't hate it as much as I expected, but I really haven't done that much with it (though I'm typing on it now).
I also got a new pair of shoes. They're not hiking shoes, but they're very comfortable and will likely go on the trip with me if I don't wear them out before then. I got them from REI. The brand is Ahnu. If you have a chance to try a pair of them, I recommend them highly.
I'll have to start taking pictures of these things to try out my camera.
